Lifestyle medicine is the cornerstone for weight management using the six pillar approach (nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, social connections, substance use) as weight is a complex interplay of hormonal regulation, genetic predisposition, environmental/psychosocial influences and energy balance. We recognize weight management is not a sprint but a lifelong journey, as it should be sustainable and optimize overall health. Weight impacts numerous chronic conditions; it has been seen that weight loss of 3-5% of one’s current body weight is associated with improvement of glucose, HgA1C and triglycerides. Weight loss greater than 5% can improve hypertension, dyslipidemia, and allow for medication reduction. Ideal weight is not only based on numbers but takes into account the whole individual including medical history, family history, functional ability and readiness to make changes. As per clinical guidelines for weight management, intensity of lifestyle therapy is based on BMI (Body Mass Index) and the presence or absence of other chronic conditions like diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, urinary stress incontinence and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Using motivational interviewing techniques, we collaborate to generate a tailored plan to set realistic goals for optimal lifestyle changes, to not only lose weight short term, but also maintain it in the long term. The emphasis is on developing sustainable healthy habits, health and longevity.
Our Weight Management Program is a comprehensive approach and supports patients who want structured guidance to lose or manage weight. We do a thorough review of your medical history followed by an evidence-based lifestyle habits assessment (90 minutes) as well as an additional behavioral questionnaire specific to weight management. We also check a complimentary HgA1C and lipid panel, if needed. We give you general lifestyle recommendations and also generate a personalized lifestyle plan focusing on nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management. We offer a 3 month and a 6 month program. The extra 3 months provide additional support, accountability and resources to help patients stay motivated and develop sustainable lifestyle changes. Follow up is done by one-on-one video visits, biweekly for 3 to 6 months, to provide support and guidance to help you implement the lifestyle plan. The focus throughout will be on diet, exercise and lifestyle changes that promote long-term weight management. We do not prescribe medications like GLP1 receptor agonists, but we will work with you to set up a lifestyle plan, in adjunct to your existing medication regimen, as per guidelines, which is to minimize side effects from these medications. We have an ongoing maintenance program, if desired, for after you complete the Weight Management program.
Total Duration: 7 consultations over 14 weeks or 13 consultations over 26 weeks with an option to continue with our Ongoing Maintenance Program.
